Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple interviews following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" comment after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
