Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments must be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
